URBAN-15

A Community-Wide Open Call for New Drummers for the 2022-2023 Performance Season

Experienced musicians are preferred but anyone willing to become a member of San Antonio’s renowned drum ensemble is very welcome to these sessions.

URBAN-15 is preparing for an exciting season of stage, festival, and special event productions in 2022-23. Performances offer a range of percussion styles from Afro-Latin, Brazilian, Caribbean and African traditions and instruments. OPEN CALL sessions are scheduled for 2 p.m. on August 14th.  Drummers are asked to bring their own pair of drumsticks and parade mallets while instruments will be provided.

Formed in 1987, Carnaval de San Anto is URBAN-15’s original, award-winning, multi-generational community drum and dance ensemble. CDSA was the first group to bring the carnaval rhythms of samba, reggae, rumba, maracatu, and Afro-Brazilian rhythms to San Antonio parades and festivals. URBAN-15’s Carnaval de San Anto has toured all over Texas and Mexico, performed at three presidential inaugurations, and become a regular at some of San Antonio’s most iconic and memorable events, such as Luminaria, the Fiesta Flambeau Parade, the King William Fair, and Jazz’SAlive. URBAN-15’s Carnaval de San Anto has changed how this city celebrates and helped shape the culture of San Antonio.

For the 21st Year,  CST in celebration of the Summer Solstice, choreographer and dancer Catherine Cisneros will present her solo performance within the lighted squares of Christopher Janney’s “Passing Light” solar sculpture. “Passing Light” was commissioned by the City of San Antonio’s Public Art Office in 2000 and completed in 2001, celebrating its 20th anniversary. The solar sculpture incorporates large plexiglass squares embedded in the ceiling that project a grid of colors onto the passageway surface. Once a year, at 2pm on the Summer Solstice, the lighted grids align with the painted grids on the floor for less than a minute as the Sun passes directly overhead.

URBAN-15 Artistic Director Catherine Cisneros has created a dance work that exploits the changing colors penetrating the environment. Her movements are designed to bring a ceremonial awareness of our planet’s humble travels within a celestial clock, evoking the elaborate rituals performed by the ancient Egyptians, Aztecs, Celts, Mayans, Hindis, Incas and others to make visible the moment of solar zenith.
