The Viewpoints Method is a technique for actor training, ensemble building, and creating movement prioritizing physical, spontaneous, and spatial awareness to support performance skills. Developed by Mary Overlie and later adapted by Anne Bogart and Tina Landau, it defines a series of exercises that build on each other using elements of time and space (the “Viewpoints”), helping performers break free from rigid, script-based traditional rehearsal constraints and foster a highly collaborative, responsive environment. In this training, attendees will explore each of the Viewpoints sequentially to form a solid base of knowledge and skill, before going on to create spontaneous and collaborative performances in real time.
*A note about this method: While this training will be held in an ADA accessible space and all are welcome to attend, please note that Viewpoints involves rigorous movement, including jogging in place, bending and squatting, moving along the ground, and speed changes. Attendees will have the opportunity to modify the exercises as needed, and will be consistently invited to engage in this type of physical activity.
About the instructor: Ruthie Buescher (artistic director of Turnip Ensemble Theater) holds an M.A. in Educational Theatre from NYU Steinhardt, with a focus on devised and physical theater. In New York, she trained in the Viewpoints Method with SITI Company, which was founded by Anne Bogart. Ruthie specializes in creating spaces that are welcoming for those without physical theater training, and simultaneously challenging and incorporating the work of more experienced artists.
Clowning is a physical performance practice centered on presence, responsiveness, and connection. It invites performers to move beyond habitual patterns and reveal something more direct and unguarded through the body, attention, and timing. In this training, participants will engage in simple, structured exercises rooted in breath, impulse, and play. The work asks for risk and close attention to the audience, building a live exchange where story and meaning take shape in real time. It supports performers across disciplines by strengthening their ability to stay present, follow impulse, and respond with clarity and honesty.
About the instructor: Julia Fae is a clown and physical theater artist working in clown, bouffon, and ensemble-based performance. Her training includes Dell’Arte International, The Clown School, The Idiot Workshop, The Celebration Barn, The Pandemonium Studio, and Upright Citizens Brigade, with a focus on physical expression, character work, and devised performance. She has led clowning workshops across the U.S., guiding students toward a more responsive, embodied performance style. Her teaching emphasizes play, risk, and developing an authentic connection with the audience.
