In celebration of National Poetry Month, URBAN-15 presents Mega Corazón 2019, our annual spoken word marathon featuring San Antonio’s premiere performance poets. Celebrating a hybrid San Antonio poetic tradition that combines street, classical, and slam performance styles, Mega Corazón is frontal, improvisational, at times painful, and often choreographed for a highly visual impact. This year’s Mega Corazón will rescreen every Monday and Friday throughout the month of April from 9am – 4pm CST, and can be viewed for free online (urban15.org/live-stream).

Poets include former state poet laureate Carmen Tafolla; internationally recognized writer (and Bill Murray’s favorite poet) Naomi Shihab Nye; National Book Award finalist John Phillip Santos; current San Antonio poet laureate Octavio Quintanilla; poetry slam champion Anthony “The Poet” Flores; spoken word artist Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson; San Antonio’s National Poetry Month founder Jim Lavilla-Havelin; playwright Gregg Barrios; Jazz Poets founder Eduardo Garza; Jacinto Cardona; Marisol Cortez; Genesis Linares; Don Mathis; Juan Tejeda with Armando Tejeda; Natalia Treviño; Frances Treviño Santos; Eddie Vega; and Mobi Warren.

As a special feature of Hidden Histories, this year’s Mega Corazón will also offer a special performance by Juan Tejeda of a 30-stanza corrido written by his father during World War II, highlighting the role of poetry as a oral form of preserving community histories.  Air time for this segment is 7:20pm.
